26th viewing. People on letterboxd love to leave reviews like "can't believe this movie invented x," but I say with not a hint of exaggeration that this movie being made is on the level of prometheus giving humanity the gift of civilization. Even just calling this a movie is like calling the sun a light bulb.

Two-and-a-half years after my last viewing of The Monkey King 3, my 23rd viewing at that point, I've returned to my favorite film with fresh eyes and a renewed perspective on film only to reach the same conclusion now as I did back then: this is still the greatest film ever made. It is the apex of all cinematic innovation before it, casting a boundless shadow over any film unfortunate enough to be made after it. The final, indisputable accomplishment of the motion picture medium, making derivative even the most timeless masterpieces film has or will ever produce since.

Liked this about as much as I expected. Political heavy-handedness with typical Hollywood bloat is a deadly combination, but these actors are great, and the romance really works (I miss my girlfriend).

Still fantastic. I'm still just as stunned at the visual creativity and daring on display here as ever. I love you EO.

I've always loved this film, but upon rewatching it here I'm realizing that all of the small things that once bothered me about it (and Tarantino) no longer seem to matter much, and I now find myself unexpectedly opening my heart to Tarantino for virtually the first time. The main point of growth is that I'm far less eager today to moralize about postmodernity, and Tarantino is clearly the American postmodern filmmaker, even more so than the other obvious candidates…
