The Long Goodbye 1973
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Throughout The Long Goodbye, the individuals Marlowe encounters continually drive home just how depravedly hollow a person is capable of being. Yet, the ending still manages to feel like a punch to the gut, equally heavy for the protagonist as for the audience watching his unwavering loyalty be thrown right back in his face. Poor Marlowe deserved much better, but at least he never lost his ability to strike a match off the fabric of reality itself :,)
