love the surrealism, shot diversity, contrast between loud and quiet, and color. it’s visually stunning.
you can draw strong comparisons to later films like mulholland drive and black swan.
it was refreshing that the film had a clear ending. today so many stories are left with ambiguous, open-ended conclusions.
the back and forth between the stalking versus industry exploitation pulled the story in different directions at times.
i wasn’t a huge fan of the slasher elements.
the sexual exploitation of stars is an important subject but the r*pe scenes went really far and felt almost pornographic.
i want a cat so badly. lovely visuals and score, it was such a pleasure to watch. it all felt like a mysterious dream. i enjoyed the themes around the power of nature, fatalism, acceptance of loss, materialism, sacrifice, and inclusivity. and i liked that the film did not anthropomorphize or gender the characters. i’m not sure i understand the ending.
fuck my chungking life
really captures the boredom and loneliness that was possible in the 90s
hong kong greatest city in da world
love how the tight close-ups and shitty bodegas and canned products make you experience urban life
an obsession with cleaning what is dirty
acab includes the cops in this movie btw
barbie movie for art school kids
cool: unbelievable costumes and sets, genuinely funny, very sexy, a few fun characters, excellent dialogue and pace, neat concept, great performances from stone, ruffalo, dafoe
meh: a bit shallow, tells a lot without showing, not subtle, socialism and philosophy haphazardly thrown in and not really explored
ultimately felt that underneath the fantasy world it was a standard story of striking out on your own and discovering yourself / woman existing in a man’s world, with not much original to say on those topics
