  there’s an exchange early on in Columbus that I think perfectly describes the film:

  - This could use just a... bit more spice.

  - You think it does?

  - Um, maybe.

  - I was going for something a little more subtle.

  - I don't even know what that means.

  - You know, less obvious.

  - Why?

  - Because sometimes you can taste the food better... and there's a better aftertaste.

  it is subtle, with an aftertaste.

  this movie gave me so much more on a second watch

  Good god I abhorred this film. Maybe it’s because I’m not a dad, but that was one of the most aggravating movie-watching experiences in a while for me. From the moment the trite black and white opens on the screen and does nothing for the whole movie, it sets the tone for this empty, vapid, and soulless, regurgitation of a film searching for meaning itself. And not finding any whatsoever.

  The storyline of “mom teaches guy how to parent child”…
