pretty fun, idiosyncratic 90s black comedy crime thriller. very much up my alley. beautiful colour palette and some excellent cinematography. almost feels like an american attempt at a kitano film.

Matewan 1987
an underseen gem. sayles clearly has a lot of admiration for the subject matter and it translates into a powerful film. although it drags a bit towards the middle, there's plenty to appreciate throughout, from the beautiful cinematography to the heartfelt moments of solidarity between the miners. whenever older films get excused for discrimination due to being 'from a different time', films like this show that people always did know better. very impressive for an 80s independent film and remains relevant today.

The Host 2006
quite conflicted on this. every bong-joon ho film i’ve seen has left me feeling somewhat cold. with this, it feels like his span of genres and themes is so broad that he struggles to ever commit to one and deliver it to a fully satisfying degree.
the actual monster felt very underused past the first 20 minutes. surely the metaphor of a being created by human apathy to our environment would be a great opportunity to show nature fighting back…

Barking Dogs Never Bite 2000
very well made, especially for a debut feature! does a good job of balancing tension and dark comedy but definitely feels a little aimless at points, possibly could’ve done with being a bit more concise but nonetheless pretty entertaining. the dog bits can be hard to watch though :(
