not my favourite de palma and honestly found so many of the characters completely two dimensional. Lots of shots that looked ridiculously cool but their contents for me at least kind of fell flat (literally paused a gunfight to do my duolingo practice). i do believe there’s a much sharper, more effectively paced film in there and some of the sets are absolutely beautiful (i love a good mcmansion) and the final shoot out in that bloodied atrium does really hold weight. maybe it’s a casualty of my complex relationship with big crime films, but just not for me this time. that world? not mine

10 Things I Hate About You 1999
“then you screwed up”
“how?”
“you never disappointed me”perfect film. can watch with absolutely anyone and they’ll enjoy it. incredibly slick, no more complicated than it needs to be with suprisingly smart camerawork that just gives the film such personality. so many little details in the background of the bigger scenes (the threesome in the back of bogey lowenstein’s party never fails to make me smile) and 90s seattle will forever be the coolest setting (elliott smith and frasier). only note - not enough allison janney but! when is there ever. still, cracking film. queuing up aurora gory alice on my spotify right now <3

this film possesses the melodrama, scope, sensitivity, finesse and technical brilliance of the scenarios i’d stage with my barbie dolls aged 5.

Basic Instinct 1992
my life has been suspiciously wholesome and joyous recently and this is exactly what I needed to rebalance the scales in that regard. classic for good reason I think - Sharon Stone is absolutely incredible (even if she does kinda get sidelined from 3/4s in) and the score is top notch. de bont and verhoeven just work their magic throughout, keeping the pace and interest despite it’s (relatively) simplistic premise that really could have made for such a dull watch…
