  Just like baseball: sentimental, nostalgic, happy, sad, a little bit in the background, noisy, quiet, exciting except when it’s boring, and nearly perfect. All hail independent films.

  Points for not being a remake and for not being totally glib all the time. It actually has some heart but it’s very chintzy and not in a terribly fun way. It’s a nepo-double-feature in the dark days of movies.

  Maybe by virtue of the runtime, not nearly as awful as the Little Mermaid live action redo. Some inspired direction, especially during the musical numbers. The, um, woodland friends were fairly grotesque and they made me even more convinced AI is not coming for anyone’s jobs just yet.

  It’s just a sad state of affairs that this thing is going to make a bazillion dollars, given that among all live action remakes it’s basically the tallest, uh, you get it.

  Wild to see how little has changed in this cursed nation in 30 years, except that people who weren’t used to being on camera every second of their lives were quite honest and real when put on the spot.
