  I’d like to begin advocating for the sort of homebrewed effects endemic to films like THE EVIL DEAD and its ilk to be re-examined as craftsmanship rather than camp. That the ingenuity of Sam Raimi, the cast and crew is laid bare in every syrupy blood splatter and cartoonishly crusty makeup job should be celebrated sincerely rather than made fodder for midnight movie mockery.

  That bit of soapboxing aside, THE EVIL DEAD remains the best the series and Raimi have ever been. Equally as agonizing as it is entertaining, few films are as chock-full of gratuitously horrific imagery.
