  With or without God the world is full of irrationalities. Bergman cuts light like stone but the shadows are still full of the weird and unexplainable.

  For me, this is a portrait of the wish to be made clear to oneself, to be opened and comprehended and justified. What tools can do it? Knives, words, sex, fear? No! says Bergman. None of these. Put your disguise back on so I can recognize you. And we will have a little party and ring bells in the aftermath of our crises of confidence.

  I like that this movie takes place in entirely hypothetical space--it basically takes place nowhere--but still feels like it takes place somewhere. The dream/the delusion/the performance has no edges and now it's the whole world.

  On the other hand, I think that in old Wes Anderson movies, style and aesthetic served character and story, and gradually this relationship has been inverted. This bothers me even when I imagine it as being part of this film's point.
