Rewatched 10 years later and amended my 3.5 star rating. I didn’t appreciate my first two watches— too wrapped up in “what it all means” and conspiracy theories a la the Room 234 documentaries.
It is about alcoholism, abuse, childhood trauma, and toxic white male masculinity. In this sense, what a powerful film by Kubrick and story by King.
To the newbies: if you enjoy A24 horror, The Shining will work for you.
