    The First Omen

    ★★★★★

One of the best mainstream horror films I have seen in recent memory. The First Omen is oozing with influences from horror greats, and felt like a true heir to Argento's Suspiria in terms of its style and score. It might not be for everyone, but I left genuinely excited that this film, which feels like both a foreign horror film and an arthouse film, got a wide theatrical release.

It's like a pop song. You know all the beats, it's all fine, it's kind of entertaining, but it's nothing great. That is until the end, where it finds a few notes that really strike differently than the rest of the film.

I know that reviews on this one were not overly positive, and it does feel reminiscent of other films (and it's better than some of those, worse than others), but Opus is pretty good. Mark Anthony Green manages to find a weird sense of humor, a weird sense of horror, and a weird sense of Malkovich, never leaning too heavily on one of those specific things. That is also a flaw the film has, because it never quite lands on…

    Love Me

    ★★★

Love Me isn't perfect, and it's a little cringey (actually, a lot cringey) at parts, but it's not the worst. The two leads, when they are out of their Bitmoji forms (another entirely different problem this film has), are fantastic together. More than anything, this film just made me want to see a movie that stars Steven Yeun and Kristen Stewart where they aren't a buoy and a satellite. Still, I didn't hate this one.

    The Seventh Day

    ★★

If you had told me that there was a movie that takes the concept of Training Day, but instead of cops it's with exorcists, I would have been immediately sold. And if you had told me that Guy Pearce was in it? I would definitely have been sold. That is essentially what The Seventh Day is, and yet, it fails to create any excitement. That is such a shame, because the concept is fantastic.

    Cosmic Sin

    ★★★

It's a cheap, goofy, poorly written, direct-to-VOD sci-fi action film starring Bruce Willis. On top of all that, it barely makes sense. And yet, despite all of that, maybe even because of all of that, I found it entertaining.
