Quite possibly the silliest movie I have ever watched. Funny, inventive, and original as hell, it leans into its low budget-ness in ways surprise and delight. It's ridiculous, to be sure, but just so creative that it's impossible to not be at least a bit impressed.

It's mostly slapstick comedy, so if that's not your cup of tea I wouldn't recommend it. But if you have a spare afternoon, a couple of friends, and a cider or two? Then you're in for a magical time.

    ★★★½

Beau Travail doesn't contain many few lines of actual dialogue. Instead it forces you to look at the scenery. The gorgeous Djibouti landscape and the faces and figures of the men as they work and train are all presented in a straight forward way, free of any of the weight usually present with speeches and conversations. Ironically, despite the heavy training the men undergo, I found the movie a bit calming. Introspective. Lonely.

It's chill. Not the most amazing cinematic experience, but worth a watch regardless.

This movie has some things going for it, some. The acting is believable, the special effects are honestly pretty good, and its depiction of a devastated New York is pretty interesting.

If it wasn't for the shaky camera, the movie might've been a 3. But the camera work was distracting, and prevented me from really paying attention to the story, surroundings, pretty much anything of importance.…
