Really shocked at how thematically barren and structurally flawed this was. Explores almost none of the ideas inherent to its own premise. Sets up a thousand threads with no real narrative or thematic heft only to abandon them anyway and become “Starship Troopers but crazy boring” for like 40 minutes. Every choice felt arbitrary. Almost nothing pays off. A lot of characters out-loud acknowledging obvious narrative problems just to hand wave them away. Really really frustrating. Liked a lot of the props and Pattinson is occasionally funny.

Promising Young Woman 2020
Truly one of the worst films I have ever seen in my entire life. Can’t even really dig into all the ways I find it somehow both thematically hollow and morally repugnant. Just awful filmmaking as well, hated the score, found the costume design to be confusing and distractingly ugly throughout, and the heinous horse girl wigs?? Even the sound mixing was awful? Insane shot choice again and again? Incoherent plot, incoherent characters, awful performances across the board. Really, really hated it. Half a star for Bo Burnham’s charm in the first half (he’s awful in the second half).
