  Every Kiyoshi Kurosawa film I see, I feel like my cinephile card needs to be revoked in some way. These films are certainly up my alley from the looming dread/isolation in broad daylight, COMPLETE ambiguity, and minimalist set up, yet they are so symbolically dense that for some reason just doesn’t fully resonate with me when I know that they should. This by any means doesn’t mean he’s a bad filmmaker but rather I dont think I’m fully equipt to  understand…

  While I was left wishing for a bit more, the atmosphere, vibes, and makeup were so on point that I appreciate the audacity it has. The story may be a bit simplistic, and a couple twists not all too surprising, but it’s still pretty strong and serious compared to other horror releases of the year. I can tell Oz Perkins is certainly trying to work through something from the interviews about his dad’s legacy, recurring themes in his works, and character arcs, so I certainly welcome him as a new horror auteur and go I want to watch more.
