    The Swimmer

    ★★★★★

I was fully blown away by The Swimmer, a visually arresting portrait of one man's journey through the decadence and fragility of upper-class white America. As he “swims” his way through the neighborhood, each scene strips away another layer of gaudy wallpaper covering up the insecurities that lie beneath the foundation of his neighbors' in-ground pools. Burt Lancaster is the perfect casting as Ned Merrill—not only does he look the part of any given boardroom exec of the era, but the…

    The Piano

    ★★★★½

An enlightening rewatch. The haunting sentimentality of The Piano shines through what I initially found cold and distant. To be sure, the film is a strange romance that is not particularly warm towards its audience. However, Jane Campion uses these as methods to construct a beautifully realized story about communication beyond speaking.

Ada's selective muteness is such a fascinating character choice because it creates a reliance on other means of interaction, whether written, translated, or seen directly through her facial…

    Alien: Romulus

    ★★★

As someone whose favorite of the franchise is the original, I appreciated Fede Alvarez leaning on his horror strengths to craft some freaky moments and entertaining sequences on top of a boilerplate story. One glaring (and unnecessary) necromancy choice aside, this also does a good job at capturing the quintessential aesthetics originated in Scott and Cameron's films. Not groundbreaking, but I'm happy to say I still don't think there's a bad Alien film!

    I'm Thinking of Ending Things

    ★★★★

Charlie Kaufman's career is paved with example after example of putting his ideas over form, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things is perhaps his most ambitious and least concrete. I'm sure the buzz surrounding this film will be its "inaccessibility." In a narrative sense, this tracks: the basic outset of a young woman meeting her boyfriend's parents at his childhood home quickly gives way to shifting realities and esoteric conversations on poetry, aging, and film criticism. This ambiguity can be…

  • Jeremy

    Jeremy

    ★★★★

A tremendously sweet and gentle film that tells you everything from its tagline: "it's about the first time you fall in love." Jeremy Jones is a reserved and precocious high schooler in New York City. A chance encounter with a girl named Susan sends Jeremy into the melodramatic throes of teenage romance. The heightened drama of every shy glance or awkward phrase perfectly captures the feeling of a teenager's first real moments of love. The entire film is predicated on…
