BEAU TRAVAIL looks incredible, creates an engrossing atmosphere, and functions on both a narrative and political level, but above all I respect it for sticking to a Tight 90 runtime. Denis Lavant has such a great movie face, and his character being at least 4 inches shorter than his subordinates works well for the core psychosexual conflict driving the plot (such as there is in a movie like this).

Crimson Tide 1995
The Kumbaya ending is kinda deflating and the character conflict is far more plot-derived than ideologically substantial, but the juice CRIMSON TIDE has is undeniable. Denzel Washington elevates mid-budget thrillers with his performances the same way Peter Cushing did all the Hammer creature features. The restraint he conveys pairs so well with Hackman's eruptions
