Read the book a few months back and finally got a round to watching the movie. Very good adaptation, did a very good job of keeping a large amount of the book while changing the timeline to suit a movie. Saoirse Ronan is phenomenal as Jo, and really drives the movie. My only criticism is that they made Beth character much flatter than the book, but I understand certain parts needed to be reduced to fit the format.
Recently read “the myth of Sisyphus” by Albert Camus and saw that this was recommended as a movie which tackled similar themes of the existentialism, nihilism, and the absurd. Joy’s character represents the nihilistic perspective, where once discovering there is no meaning, rejects purpose. While Evelyn’s character (with Waymond’s help) much like Camus rejects the pessimistic view and accepts the absurdity. By doing so she lives in defiance of what is supposed to be a punishment, and much like Sisyphus, we must imagine her happy.
