This hit just the right buttons for me. I'll be the first to admit that I gravitate towards "weird" cinema just because it usually goes hand-in-hand with uniqueness and originality, and yeah, sometimes I give it a pass even if it's lacking in other areas (not that that's the case with this film). But this one in particular was odd in all the right ways to get my brain more excited than usual. And that strangeness is seeped into everything,…

On the Silver Globe 1988
It seems that no matter what order you watch Żuławski's films in, each one seems to open new doors to what cinema can be and do, even after all the decades that have passed since. No one has a brain quite like his. And no film is quite like this; part narrative, part tone poem, part philosophical rumination, part therapy session, part allegory, part true story. Sci-fi, medieval fantasy, multiple religions, Poland's political situation, and Żuławski's personal life are all…

In Cold Blood 1967
This is one that I found myself appreciating more than I actually liked. I can see why it's so revered: the cinematography consistently looks great, the acting is quite solid, and a lot of the ideas and moments land well. But it's just way too long and drawn out for me. It spends quite a long time spinning wheels and either retreading information that's already been delivered or following characters on pointless side paths that don't amount to anything I…

K-12 2019
I was not familiar with this artist (Melanie Martinez is a pop artist who wrote, co-directed, starred in, and made costumes for this film) before this, so I went in not as a fan, but as a lover of weird cinema. On that front, this film delivered satisfactorily. It's a fun little gem whose style provides enough interest to make it an enjoyable experience despite its flaws.
This film's greatest asset is immediately apparent: the visuals. The costumes, the hair…

Ne Zha 2019
Ultimately a kids' movie in all the wrong ways - looks down on its audience with the most obvious and boring beats for the most part, and jokes consist of things like "man sounds like a lady" and "fat guy farts." A few of the action scenes showcase some fun creativity, but they aren't frequent enough to offset how annoying most of the rest of the movie is. It doesn't help that I don't really like the designs of any of the characters that aren't dragons. Overall pretty lackluster. I hope the sequel is worth the hype.
