  After waiting impatiently since 2021 — it’s finally here! Somehow, it managed to exceed my unfairly high expectations.   Definitely underrated. A great cast led by De Niro, amazing filming locations, shootouts, car chases (80 vehicles were destroyed in the making of this film), and the story itself isn’t wonderful, but it ties everything together in a satisfying way. Had a great time, and I’ll likely rewatch this sooner rather than later… probably around the next time I rewatch Heat.

  Police Story: Lockdown 2013

  This has nothing to do with the classic Police Story franchise, unless you wanted to consider it a gritty reboot starring an aging Jackie Chan. Gone is the silly humor that made those decades old films so endearing. 

  I’m a Jackie Chan Stan, so my immense bias will likely swing any of his stuff over to a positive rating. This film here has some issues, particularly with the busy story and the editing. Jackie’s great though, and there are some fun action scenes.

  It’s a risky thing to hype a movie up to such tremendous levels… one would hope that a check wasn’t written that couldn’t be cashed. When Longlegs was mentioned in the same sentence as Silence of the Lambs in early reviews (and a few others such as Se7en), well, it’s about as bold a comparison as can be made.   Instead of adapting the bestselling nonfiction book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” into a documentary, Ava DuVernay made the vastly inferior decision to fictionalize a narrative of the authors life as she researches for her book… and the result is a pandering, didactic, and emotionally manipulative slog. Origin is filled with totally tasteless dramatizations (bordering on maddening) of scenes such as a lynching and the death of Trayvon Martin at the hands of George Zimmerman.
