If Guy Maddin and James Leyland Kirby collaborated on a eulogy for a dearly missed mutual friend if might look and sound something like this. And yet, it is so deeply intimately personal that it feels wrong to attribute cultural comparisons to something like Still Raining, Still Dreaming. An ironic state of affairs when you consider that this movie was made using a video game that, in many ways, is the antithesis of what has been achieved here.

Crossroad 2005
The scene where the CJ is running through a forest of broken polygons, fighting frantically to free himself as he seems to drown in the glitching textures really affected me. Then transitioning from all that frenetic motion into silent the contemplation of flowers in the rain where we, the audience, are held captive in the moment for what feels like eternity... that felt like intruding on a private moment that can't be fully understood because we had no right witnessing it. I don't know why I found this so moving but, I did.

Van Diemen's Land is unlike anything else I have ever seen. Whilst most based-on-a-true-story horror films derive their scare factor from sensationalism it is the restraint with which Alexander Pearce's bungled prison colony escape is portrayed that manages to get right under your skin. The depiction of cannibalism is so real and so matter of fact that it forces you to confront the truth of what is being presented. The creators of Van Diemen's Land are intent on reminding us…

Death of a Unicorn 2025
I have mixed feelings about this movie.
On the one hand, the novelty factor of making an Aliens/Jurassic Park-style monster movie with unicorns worked gloriously well. They landed the bit and landed it well. What began as a comedic curiosity built into something truly terrifying thanks to beautiful production design, impeccably timed scares and gory kills that are well beyond what anyone would be expecting from a movie about unicorns.
