Housekeeping 1987
A bittersweet movie about sisters and family. Sort of a cottage core meets Mystic Pizza vibe. It’s limited in representing some of the more fantastical elements of Marilynne Robinson’s novel. Sylvie’s dysfunction is emphasized; it’s hard to forget the stacks of newspapers and cans that dominate each scene in the house. What starts as an ode to Ruthie and Lucille’s ability to adapt and imagine a new kind of family climaxes with the death knell of reality that adolescence brings. When threatened with yet another separation, Ruthie, guided by Sylvie, chooses instead to give up housekeeping altogether.
