The transcontinental post-apocalyptic trek for love's sake alone really does make this movie worthwhile. Not even nuclear holocaust, worldwide plague, and the complete collapse of civilization can deter a man from struggling to be with the woman he loves.

For all its aristocratic grandeur, regal pomp, and honorable formalities, polite society is nothing more than an elaborate setup for feasting, gambling, and fucking accessed through predatory opportunism and pathetic striving. Kubrick's cold ironic detachment is the perfect format to expose its farcical underside: the empty superficiality and heartless alienation unleashed into the world in modern capitalist life—where the father has died and only puerile folly remains.
