Stunningly nightmarish and disquieting with the most fitting soundtrack. More Sofia Gubaidulina pls.
I'm torn between posting a witty one-liner and breaking down everything I absolutely loathed about this amateur ass film.
I don't remember it verbatim but there's a cliché along the lines of "you can see the reflection of the artist in their work" and honestly, yes, I can plainly see a director whose single experience with music/jazz was in high school.
Okay, looks like I'm leaning towards that break down but I'll need a beer first.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I can't imagine anyone would watch this film without already knowing what happens but beware the bite of the *SPOILERS*
This film was a beautifully shot, totally immersive downer. That's less a criticism and more a compliment to how Campos and on-screen Christine, Rebecca Hall, were able to retrofit us into the mind of body of a person ultimately willing to take themselves out on camera. Hall's Christine is enigmatically amicable yet cumbersomely reserved, a simultaneous firecracker and wallflower. Intelligent…
Even recalling this film curls my lips into a bashful smile. Linklater has such a knack for capturing genuine human behaviour; the rush of crush, the ramble of a late night conversation, the pang of loneliness in a goodbye. It's so easy to transpose yourself into this film and watch it with nostalgia.
