  All We Imagine as Light 2024

  There's this great earnesty and vulnerability to this film that you don't often get in Indian films, and I love the way it weaves that love into this urban setting. Mumbai feels fantastical, big and crushing all at once. The pace change midway through to the intimacy of a small village is very well executed. I especially love some of the small bits of acting here, the realness of Anu's little smiles when Shiaz tells her they might get a chance to be together is just so lovely.

  Some interesting iteration on the ideas present in Cure with this anxiety of depersonalized murder again at the forefront. There's a different angle here though, with a focus on the ghosts of the past, of urban spaces we'd rather forget, and of the restless amnesia of a city always redeveloping. This one has more wooden acting than Cure and the shot selection isn't as inspired but still, it's K Kurosawa so the film looks great and there's this fantastically unsettling…

  I watched this for some unknown reason as a teen and remembered loving it. Coming back to it now feels so fresh, it feels like the ideal of what a superhero movie could be. Willis and Jackson are just incredible here and play off each other every way youd want them to in a place like this.
