    I quite liked this one.

Having already watched another Guillermo de Toro film, Crimson Peak, I’m starting to seeing a theme of surrealism that I think he does very well. Aside from the beautiful set, costume, and creature design. I really enjoyed the story being told.

There’s beauty in the universal nature of connection, in the way it transcends barriers.

*Obligatory like because I rewatch almost yearly.

This movie never gets any better no matter how many times I watch it. And yet, I still do. A necessary evil to get to the better movies in the series (New Moon, obviously). The only novelty this time around was seeing my partner’s raw reaction since it was his first time ever watching Twilight.

One and a half out of ten; will be watching again.

Was this the best intro into Cronenberg’s work? Remains to be seen.

The art direction and body horror were some of my favorite parts of the movie.

The plot felt a little lacking to me. Maybe more world building would’ve helped. I also felt like some of the metaphors were spoon fed to the audience in a way that wasn’t necessary. They could’ve been conveyed just as effectively through a more developed story.

Still enjoyed the movie overall though.

This honestly had some much potential. There were so many things they could’ve explored. Adéle’s relationship with her own sexuality. How she changes as she finds herself and the way it chafes her connection with Emma. Adéle’s codependency and the power dynamic within the age gap relationship.

But instead, we got a far too long movie with egregiously bad sex scenes clearly aimed for the male gaze. And poorly at that. This felt like an attempt at a queer coming-of-age story told from the perspective of a straight cis man who’s only ever seen really, really shitty lesbian porn.
