Edit: I’ve now seen it. Everything I’ve said below is still true, except for the part where I say I haven’t seen it. I really wanted to like this film. I enjoyed the first for everything it pastiched, and, for an hour or so the, sequel did a decent enough job of keeping up the craft of the original one.
Then it completely fell apart.
I left the theatre and all I could think was “why?”. Truly an absolutely pointless film.
Positives? Gaga does the best with what’s she’s given. Which isn’t much. But even then she quickly becomes a vessel for getting the plot moving again.
Boring, nowhere near as clever as it thinks it is, and ultimately pointless. Yawn. Episode coming soon.
It’s hard to pin down what exactly is missing from this film, as it’s a combination of little things that derail it. The set pieces are mostly huge and delightful, aside from another final battle that becomes a CGI mess and misses the mark. The acting performances range from some of the best seen in the DCEU through to, “this is the take they went with? Really?”
Wonder Woman was legit a 4 or 4.5 star film for me, and maybe the expectations were too much, but this genuinely feels like a missed opportunity.
Also, the racist stereotypes can fuck right off.
A film so controversial it’s made me come out of Letterboxd retirement.
Is this the worst comic book movie ever? Short answer, no. I can name about 10 other films that completely dwarf this in terms of sheer shittery.
