    Murder, My Sweet

    ★★★½

Murder, My Sweet is notable for being the first major film to be based on the work of author Raymond Chandler and featuring his detective character, Philip Marlowe. It has all the elements that I have come to expect from watching other Marlowe films: a rich family with complicated relationships that hires Marlowe, a missing McGuffin, and not one but two femme fatales.

It's a complicated tale but the great direction and acting help carry it. I only knew Dick…

    Stop Making Sense

There is something about the music of the Talking Heads that puts me in a good mood. Now I wouldn't necessarily put these songs on for casual listening but in the form of this concert film, I quite enjoyed myself. The film does an admirable job at making it feel like you are seeing everything that is going on. David Byrne knows how to put on a good show!

You get the mysterious circumstances that bring everyone together, creating an air of mystery. You have the interplay and conflict between all the characters to…

    Sound of Metal

    ★★★★½

Based on what little I knew about it (basically just the synopsis), I expected Sound of Metal to mostly be about a drummer trying to play music while losing his hearing. While there are aspects of this (especially towards the beginning), this is much more of a reflective story that touches on many different parts of life. The standouts that are being praised are Riz Ahmed's emotional performance as Ruben and the sound design, both very deserving of the praise.…
