  While 'Aftershock' attempts to use a natural disaster to expose a society coming apart at the seams, its mishmash of stock slasher characters, brutal survivalist horror, and punchline nihilism only makes you wish it first took the time to build something up that would be interesting to tear down.

  Within this cinematic pile of rubble are production values questionable enough that you take notice (saying something for a low budget horror movie) and a script that teasingly baits and switches harsh morality plays with cruel, clockwork coincidences that in the end only service a weird kind of sadistic irony.

  The amount of sheer talent on display here is staggering, and the vintage performance clips are appropriately revelatory, but as a documentary it is wildly unfocused and unsure of its primary subject. A celebration of musical triumph in an under recognized field? A tribute to recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Darlene Love? Booster project for up and comer Judith Hill? It tries to be all of these things, but is so fragmented that it can't fully flesh out…
