It’s a little embarrassing to admit I only knew of Carpenter as a horror director for a long time - definitely regarded as one of the best. Between Big Trouble in Little China, EFNY and this, I almost feel robbed not to have known of his action genre output until recently. The body horror subgenre has never been my favourite, even as a fan of scary movies. I really, really enjoyed this. The performances were incredible and it was visually stunning. It wasn’t afraid to reference (insert Gaga quote here) but still felt fresh and unique. Many other people will be able to unpack this better than I ever could in a little review, but the bottom line is that this was masterful.
The way they featured certain places in this film (the gym, the dance studio, the tattoo shop) felt like these individual businesses offered to help finance the film in exchange for a scene. They even randomly advertised some influencer’s Instagram. It was all very transparent. I forgot I was watching a horror film. The ending was one of the worst I’ve ever seen.
Also, the overdubbing was so distracting. Almost everything sounded like they were reading the script like a book.
