Even as a fan of Sammo this wasn’t quite for me. While bookended with pretty incredible stunt work the majority of the film is pretty poor humour. It’s like bad pandemic era cumtown bits crossed with bleeding nose Master Roshi. Mileage may vary dramatically. Those last twenty minutes are incredible though. Banger soundtrack too. The film picks up significantly whenever Jackie Chan is on screen.

Two notable things: the name Yankee Ginseng and Jackie Chan dressed as Arale.

I tend not to review shows, especially Netflix ones, but every now and then Stephen Graham makes something good enough I want to make a note. This is presumably the best show of the year if not the best mini series.

Fantastic film made all the more impressive that it was made in secret. The use of real phone footage worked really well to blend the family drama with the wider conflict, some of the best use of real footage I’ve seen in a film. Incredibly courageous to make a film that forces you into exile. The last stretch feels like a different film entirely, not bad by any means but a lot less good. Much preferred the film when it was a family drama in a claustrophobic setting.
