It’ll sound silly but I did watch this for Will Sharpe. So it’s sad that he plays such a bizarre “sexy mysterious man” character. His delivery is off just enough that it sounds almost AI, but this must be intentional because I know he’s a good actor. A number of others in the film have the same stilted dialogue and I wondered if it stemmed from English being a second language to them but Will Sharpe is English. There has…

Even as a fan of Sammo this wasn’t quite for me. While bookended with pretty incredible stunt work the majority of the film is pretty poor humour. It’s like bad pandemic era cumtown bits crossed with bleeding nose Master Roshi. Mileage may vary dramatically. Those last twenty minutes are incredible though. Banger soundtrack too. The film picks up significantly whenever Jackie Chan is on screen.

Two notable things: the name Yankee Ginseng and Jackie Chan dressed as Arale.

Been thinking over this one for a while. Disappointed it never resonated with me as much as it has with everyone else. Tried to like reviews that say what I thought better than I can.

Fantastic film made all the more impressive that it was made in secret. The use of real phone footage worked really well to blend the family drama with the wider conflict, some of the best use of real footage I’ve seen in a film. Incredibly courageous to make a film that forces you into exile. The last stretch feels like a different film entirely, not bad by any means but a lot less good. Much preferred the film when it was a family drama in a claustrophobic setting.
