Hugh Grant did not disappoint in this blueberry pie, dark maze basement-entrapped Silence of the Lambs-esque film. Hugh's natural charm lends his character intelligence, strength, believability and an almost unrecoverable creepiest --nearly pushing him over the top for me in a bad way like Matthew McConaughey actually did in Magic Mike -- the skeezy alright, alright, alright character. But I digress...
Here, Hugh plays a character with a brain full of world religion factoids, and a huge dash of psycho,…
This film has many great moments. The main character arc is well done, the make up, the horror is all fantastic. Dennis Quaid's character being so over the top and the recurring scenes in the long hallway worked so well from the perspective of a varying dream state or psychotic episode. If not a dream or psychotic episode, the movie is much less for me with too many gaps that took away from the experience. Definitely worth the watch, however... unless misophonia is a thing for you. ;)
Slow, surprising burn that drew me in unexpectedly. The characters were largely unremarkable but the themes of survival and missteps through fear were strong, well done; the resolution, pregnant with regret, was better than expected. Overall, well written and seriously underrated at a 2.7 IMHO. The writing and cinematography alone elevate this film to the 3 range. Add in the strong theme development and resolution pushed me to a 3.5. Worth the time.
Good acting, gorgeous scenery and an interesting twist on moving through life's horrors. Best line was the last, brought the film up a half star for me.
