It’s clear without even watching the film that Ellen is not part of a “love triangle” but a victim. Count Orlok doesn’t symbolize Ellen’s “dark desires”; he is the embodiment of an abuser and groomer.
In Murnau’s, Herzog’s, and Eggers’s adaptations, as well as in Bram Stoker’s original story, the narrative revolves around male control and obsession with women’s sexuality—not their free expression of it. This fixation is the core of the horror.

Wow. Did Geneviève and Guy truly choose their new lives over each other, or was it just a matter of resignation? Geneviève needed security, and Guy needed to move forward, but did they ever truly let go of what they once shared? That lingering question is what haunts me. In La La Land, there’s a sense of acceptance and closure, as if neither regrets how things turned out. Here, though, I sense regret and sorrow, which makes it more heartbreaking.
