While films based on toys inspire a healthy amount of skepticism in relation to their potential quality, Barbie joins the Lego Movie in being a genuinely good movie. The casting is on point throughout, the set design and costumes are amazing, and the film is littered with small details that show the care that was put in. While it has a pretty predictable reveal, it's not used as the emotional climax so I didn't feel it impeded the story in anyway. The script is cleverly written, and the performances perfectly deliver each line.
A film focusing on the political and ethical scrutiny held towards the man at the focal point of the creation of the most controversial invention ever created. It is incredibly tense, even anxiety inducing at times, and accompanied by a score that is immensely uncomfortable. A rom com that doesn't feel full of clichés. While it has some clichéd plot points near the ending, the majority of the film is a funny, charming, and heartfelt story about 2 people getting close to eachother and falling in love.
