Masterpiece.
I've yet to say that about a film from the 20s, but that's exactly what the Passion of Joan of Arc is; A masterpiece.
The score consists of largely choral vocals throughout. A perfect pairing for the religious nature of the film's source material. It is perfect for high tension moments where you, and Joan, feel an overwhelming verbal barrage of attacks from all sides. For the few serene moments the film offers, it's just as perfect.

The first thing that struck me with Nosferatu was the incredible score. The music throughout can jump from fun and whimsical to unbelievably tense in a moment. The score really carries every single scene of this film.
Being a silent film, at first the overacting on characters faces struck me as funny, almost silly. However it's impressive how that same overacting that causes joy in one scene can cause unparalleled discomfort in the next. It's unsettling.

I think it's worth noting how important I consider this movie to be in terms of the racist history of Hollywood. Rarely will you find a movie in the 20s with predominantly black characters, but when there is one, it's usually filled with white actors in blackface. Seeing an independently produced film by a black director and black cast for a black audience in the 20s is revolutionary and Oscar Micheaux deserves any and all credit he gets for being…
