    The best movie ever made that I totally understand why somebody might consider it one of the worst.

    Something darkly oppressive about baroque in black-and-white. Without the colour, perhaps all that's left is the violent power it's meant to simultaneously reflect and obscure.

    The extras, abstracted from personhood by their unnerving stillness, part of the set more than part of the cast, even when they speak their repetitive dialogue.

    A game you can't lose is no game at all. But…

    Another Christmas guardian angel Best Picture nominee. The post-WW2 Academy really had a raging boner for these inspirational flicks, huh.

    Not super familiar with Great Expectations, so only judging this as a single film. In short, handsome production, well made, have some issues with the story.

    A big thing I'm missing, really, is, we never see him learn the ways. I called this My Fair Lady-but-for-boys, but where Eliza has to spend quite a lot of time learning how to be a lady, Pip adapts to the role of gentleman instantly. He goes in like a fart and a half…
