An absolute achievement visually. Sense of scale and atmosphere are used to great effect. Another delightful Hans Zimmer score that reaches its full effect in theater. The performances had a variety to them that gave a sense of depth as each character provided their own layer to the story, as opposed to all existing on the same emotional plane. The last time I felt that a series of books was adapted this well to film may be Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings.
One of the best representations of the phrase “a labor of love “ that I’ve seen. It is common to see some knife skills or close up shots to give the illusion of food prep in a film or show about cooking. Here, the audience watches as components are added, meat is flipped, soups are built. The acting and filmmaking to create these scenes is impressive enough on their own. After watching this film, I put on the trailer to realize it contains almost all of the dialogue in A Ghost Story. That creates a degree of difficulty for emotion that is difficult to surmount, and for me this one couldn’t quite do it. It was somewhat affecting, at times moving, and I do believe thoughtfully made. It also felt a few ideas short and a few compelling shots shy of being a film that would make me feel more.…
This goes in the pantheon of movie trailers for me. I watched it what felt like once a day for months. It is an incredibly important story that I was delighted to have told. And yet, I’m at a loss for what to say about this film that feels memorable. Having seen it a few times, I struggle to pick out moments beyond that which is already chronicled in history. It was made with too much care to rate poorly.…
