Scorsese’s latest (and hopefully last) film is an overly drawn-out, self indulgent mess.

What initially appears to be a somewhat intriguing subject matter is desecrated by a turgid, tedious, and innately frustrating plot.

The writing on display is beyond abysmal; there is zero character development across our established ensemble of dislikable and stagnant characters. I really cannot fathom how the writer-director who crafted masterpieces such as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas produced this utter drivel.

As it’s Scorsese though, expect the feigned love for this film to be aplenty, in the media and this site alike.

Horrendous - time to hang up the gloves, Marty.

The overarching emotion I felt watching the critically acclaimed sci-fi/adventure hit, was confusion; confused at how this, sometimes charming but ultimately average and convoluted plot, won 'Best Original Screenplay' at the Oscars, confused as to how this film seems to receive non-stop praise wherever I look, confused at this being the "most awarded film of all time".

The Oscar winning Michelle Yeoh plays Evelyn, a Chinese immigrant who runs a laundromat with her husband, Waymon. A troubled relationship with both…

I’m not sure how one can make a film on political discourse in modern America leading to a civil war, and still coming out with an apolitical screenplay.

Garland’s attention to detail in world building, cinematography, editing, and music is excellent. The performances are also very commendable.

And yet, the film has absolutely nothing of meaning to say. There’s no sense of any underlying political nuance - or didactic purpose.

It felt like a sophisticated zombie, slasher film. Nothing more.

Intriguing and sometimes funny, but ultimately charmless coming-of-age story, which does manage to showcase some stunning cinematography and features a solid cast.

However, Ayoade’s directorial debut falters primarily in its’ irritating and unlikable ensemble of central characters, particularly the unhinged and sociopathic protagonist, Oliver.

It was hard to ignore that the plot seriously lacks direction; the audience are left unsure on what the actual point of the film is, or what growth or changes Oliver needs to make.

    Multiple plot…
