Kind of a mess in the same way Picasso's 'Guernica' is kind of a mess. All chaos and fire, and all the better for it all.
Pair this with 'Good Time' for a great "Stressed out in New York" double-bill.
There were a few flaws. The typography choices read like they're pulled from a Great Gatsby themed cocktail bar (and are nothing like the wonderful poster of the film). The film never acknowledges any struggle or personal issue within the band. And the documentary never grounds itself in its time period (post 9/11 North America) properly, which for a band like BSS whose core message was something akin to simply "enjoy life, have fun with friends", is an odd omission.…
I don't believe for a minute that it justifies its runtime, but there are many moments of brilliance tucked away in there for those willing to endure. There is an argument that without the build up, those moments aren't earned, but I'm not sure. It will likely go in that category of "Great films I will never watch again".
