i get it. he’s an actor who doesn’t remember who he was (amnesia), who, retracing his steps and going through the motions of a life he doesn’t remember, is playing the role of himself. the uninterrupted long shots give the impression of an actor on stage in a play, stepping from one scene into another as the lights and setting change around him.

without his endless justifications and explanations, tomas appears in essence simply a womanizer and compulsive cheater. compared to the book, his character is reduced, whereas on screen tereza and sabina are captivating, their interiority more complex and mysterious than when explicated by tomas’ masturbatory narration.
