Surprisingly good pre-Exorcist possession (or haunting?) thriller... Looks good, well paced and an ending that likely felt fresh at the time. MacLaine is so good as the insulated divorcee socialite forced to delve into cultures and faiths unfamiliar in her pursuit to help her troubled brother. While by todays standards the exploration may come of as exploitative, I was surprised how considered and sensitive the films exploration of Puerto Rican culture and sanatoria for it's time, contrasting the social divide and displaying a favorable contact into an unfamiliar faith.
Extra points for Warhol factory players Pat Ast and Holly Woodlawn as background inmates at Bellevue.=)

There is absolutely nothing new in this film - everything has been cut and pasted from previous sci-fi films. Alien invasion in a small town, parasitic aliens, mind control, hive-mind, paranoid government agencies... even Donald Sutherland is borrowed from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But where Kaufman winked back to his material's sci-fi roots, The Puppet Masters has no interest in homage.
That said, this isn't really isn't a bad movie. It's predictable as hell but an enjoyable ride none-the-less. The always adorable Julie Warner is always worth watching and appearances from Keith David, Yaphet Kotto and Will Patton keep things somewhat credible.

Campy, trashy and a terrible ending... And I liked it SO much! Elizabeth Ashley is great here in her first film role.
