Let me preface this review by saying that within the action genre, Novocaine is a 4 star movie. Overall, it’s a 3 1/2 star film. It’s fun, it has heart, and it absolutely doubles down on the concept of the main character using his inability to feel pain to save the day.

There’s not many things in a film that I love more than gripping dialogue, especially when paired with subtle but effective facial expressions and body language. This is extremely effective in the thriller/mystery/horror genres, where perfect writing and delivery can subtly hint at something more sinister. When a thriller can spend its first hour doing this, having you on the edge of your seat through conversation alone, it has to be a great film… right?

I wasn’t too far into the movie before thinking, “yep, this is definitely a Netflix rom-com.” It’s a Hallmark movie on steroids, but I’m not sure if that is a compliment or an insult. The story is basic, but at times can be engaging. The big name actors put in a mostly bland performance, but have some bright moments. It’s not a bad movie but not a good movie either. It’s just there. My final thought- Joey King is a bad actress. Such a bad actress.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood contains the trademark pieces of a film that Quentin Tarantino is known for. Solid dialogue, over the top violence, dark humor, and an overall offbeat story.
