God I absolutely ADORE this movie. Rewatching this film I found myself adoring Rachel Griffiths and Tony Colette’s incredible chemistry, their friendship being what saves ultimately saves Muriel and pushes her to change is so heartwarming and special. It’s phenomenal seeing a female friendship portrayed realistically and so human. This film is incredibly feminist and warps the chick flick genre upside down. One of my absolute favorites to watch with girly friends. I also don’t care what y’all say about Mamma Mia, I count this film as the best ABBA film.
Overall, it's a decent movie with outstanding cinematography—truly a gorgeous and unique film to look at. I was really hooked in the first half, but got lost during part three when the horror elements became cliche and predictable. The film's best parts are the crime drama elements. While it's decent, it's not mind-blowing, and I was a bit disappointed given the hype. Nicolas Cage delivered an amazing performance, but his look was off-putting. A charming British period piece. I love these kind of movies that the UK produces. It’s easy to watch but didnt really blow me away. Love period pieces though. Olivia Coleman is of course as always incredibly versatile and talented.
