Watched after re-reading the book. Doing that always makes the movie seem a little shallow by comparison. Drummond is a little too villainous I think. The movie also leans too heavily into the "see, science takes faith too" angle that isn't really part of the book, though religion is often mentioned in it. Jodie Foster is the perfect Ellie Arroway. Her impassioned speech in front of the committee near the start was a little melodramatic. I wonder if her turtleneck and blazer in that scene is a nod to Carl Segan.

The Shining 1980
The camera movement in the ax scene is literally one of the best moments in cinema history. 4.5 because I just read the book and they don't do the character's justice. Especially Danny. In this movie he's lost and helpless, seemingly possessed, while in the book he's the most aware character. Jack's descent into madness also isn't really motivated or sympathetic, like it is in the book. Shelley Duvall is perfect though.
