Raise the Red Lantern 1991
The original novella originally titled "Wives and Concubines" (later changed after the release of this film) by Su Tong did not mention any red lanterns. But Zhang's inclusion of these lanterns was a great way to symbolize the overbearing power the patriarchy has on women, serving as a constant reminder to compete against each other for the attention of a man who does not truly care for them.
