This movie was deeply upsetting and basically came down to “hey, isn’t it wild how much women hate themselves?!” As I said to my sister, “The Substance…more like no substance. Am I right?” Anyway, I mostly never want to think about this movie again hence this very short review. Also, tbh I watched half this movie with my eyes closed so don’t listen to me.

Conclave 2024
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I really enjoyed watching this movie but for all its potentially powerful messages, I found it sort of lacking in narrative punch at the end. (I mean, was I chanting "Trans Pope...Trans Pope!" as the final reveal happened? Yes. Did it feel like they dealt at all with what it would mean to have an intersex Pope? Nope. ) It brought up a lot of interesting questions but didn't seem to say much about them. All in all, fun intrigue, amazing performances, and beautiful design work but not one that will stick with me a long time.

Challengers 2024
An original piece of IP for adults about feelings and complicated relationships from the husband of the writer/director of "Past Lives" and the director of "Call Me By Your Name"? This is an Amanda movie. Unsurprisingly, I loved this. Loved the performances. Loved the inventive cinnematography. Loved the intense focus on just three characters and the propulsive feeling of the story from start to finish. Josh O'Connor has now risen in my ranks of actors after already loving his performance in The Crown. I was also very impressed by costume, hair and make-up making the three leads convincingly 18 and 32.

The Piano Lesson 2024
I liked this movie, but I didn't love it. I struggle with play adaptations that don't feel like they gain anything from being a film. I don't know that being able to see the flashbacks to the piano heist or having images of the ghost of Sutter appear made the story any more resonant. I also think Wilson's dialogue feels more appropriate and powerful on stage. That being said, I love this story and the questions it raises about what…
