  My first real dive into Buñuel’s work (I’m in desperate need for a rewatch of Belle de Jour), with his most scandalous, controversial release; Viridiana. The titular character is a young woman in the process of becoming a nun, when her mother superior notifies her that she must go visit Don Jaime—her uncle that has taken care of the monetary requirements for her clerical education.   Rohmer’s fifth Moral Tale presents a contemplative exploration of the male psyche, in which the protagonist yet again seems to be obsessed with himself. The way Jerome adoringly speaks about his transgressions works as a means to justify them, and consequently there is no coming to terms with his own morality (or rather the lack thereof). 

  I feel like Rohmer takes many of the themes of La Collectionneuse here and fully develops them in a far more interesting way. Among…
