I think part of why this wasn't received too well is that the first segment is far and away the best segment. It sets up expectations that the other two – while good – cannot meet.
But even in its lesser moments it's got terrific actors wearing terrific clothing. Jesse Plemons' win at Cannes was well-deserved. He has an ability to modulate his voice and actions perfectly for every single line and movement. He's the kind of actor where you…

This feels like three different movies smashed into one, each of which could be much stronger if expanded. They all have their moments, but they end too quickly to really start caring, especially since many of the family's problems come down to having too much money. That said, the climactic scene towards the end (and how quickly it passes) is one of the best statements about war I've ever seen in a movie. That's not nothing.

It’s important to understand that Megalopolis is not set in the real world. I don’t mean that in the sci-fi/fantasy sense. I mean this movie is set in the world of Shakespeare; of Greek tragedy; of Ancient Rome. If you can accept that you can be on its wavelength and at least understand what it’s going for. If you can’t you will think it’s one of the worst movies ever made.

Despite Coppola going to great lengths to establish that,…

This movie forces you to watch it on its own terms, and had I not seen it in a theater I probably wouldn't have accepted those terms. Once you give yourself up to the idea of watching a woman do chores for three-and-a-half hours it becomes an absorbing, calming, and hypnotic experience. I'm thankful I didn't wear a watch, because not knowing how much time has passed allowed me to live inside its deliberately slow pace without getting antsy. I expected to hate this film and hate the fans of the film for being pretentious assholes. I did not expect to become one of those assholes.
