"Everyone calls me a dreamer. My head's in the clouds. Could a real boy love me?"

in claude autant-lara’s gorgeously bittersweet sylvie et le fantôme, an unexpected love affair between the corporeal and incorporeal becomes an allegory for girlhood desire. a delectably ornate and tasteful cinematic creation, sylvie possesses many of the typical markings of classic french cinema that fell out of vogue during the french new wave: its uncritical focus on nobility, its literary roots, its formal elegance. perhaps…

an ice cold, impossibly sleek noir. nihilism has never looked so poetic. explores urban life as a state of purgatory, as alienating as the marvellously discordant soundtrack. as two lost souls, saeko and muraki remain mostly elusive to viewers, any mentions of their past backgrounds, how they came to be, are obscured by their vices — instead, they are moulded by the city's unstoppable rhythm, its ever present violence and lethargy, in their inevitable march towards death. hyperbolises, or perhaps accurately evokes, our own indifference and numbness in the modern day. like gun crazy without any of its manic (revolutionary) passion.

slow, sluggish and inert: not words i'd like to use to describe a rare female-led detective procedural but we must have higher standards for art! relies too much on the zany charm of truffaut's last muse fanny ardant. sorely missing any semblance of tension. i can't help but feel that it would be vastly improved upon through the presence of a homme fatal (if it's bland can it at least be erotic?). my least favourite truffaut, i think.

i see this film as a win for the asian australian diaspora... we no longer must look to america for sub-par representation (eeaao, crazy rich asians, past lives) because we now have our own awful film to contend with ❤️
