I saw this once before, back in the 99s. I remembered it being an indecipherable film, Lovecraftian and unsettling, with a twist ending.
Now I find it to be an interesting horror movie setup that eases out of scares and into existential drama. Where I once thought the ending was unearned and contrived, now I see it as obvious and candidly less interesting than I remembered.
I also think the final text card undermines the core theme of the movie, existing almost as a nod to an earlier intended version of the script.
Expected a weak retread and sequel to the first, but got something a bit different. Still a similar story of a man heading to Shaolin to train in kung fu before coming back home to right the wrongs of oppression but... Where the first movie felt like the retelling of a true story, this one was more of a comedy. At first it felt silly and inferior to the first, but with time, it was just fun with an endearing sense of humor--all credit for that going to Gordon Liu's performance--that's even more surprising compared to the earnestness of the first movie.
